History

In 1969, construction began on Cooper's Square shopping centre. It was built in three phases between the years of 1969 and 1974. It originally consisted of 46 small units and 5 big units. At this time only the underhill walk mall existed.

In 1979 Cooper's Square had an extension into the former Sainsbury's unit now a W H Smith and two more units were also built, which now have been knocked together to form a larger unit, now where Superdrug is located.

In 1982 Sainsbury's moved to a new unit that had just been built, and the former Sainsbury's unit became a Woolworths (supermarket) .

In 1996 Sainsbury's moved again to a new unit that had been built across the road. The former unit was split up and became a BHS, JJB Sports, (now a HMV) and Au Natural (now poundworld).[4]

Proposed Extention

Planning application was submited in summer 2012, for a 110000 sq ft[7] extention on coopers square shopping centre. The shopping centre will extend out into the car park, and into some shops on nearby station street (The Royal Bank of Scotland, A dry cleaners, two estate agents and a night club.) The extention hopes to create a new modern fascade to the shopping centre.

In the extentions 11 new, two storey units are planned, as well as a new 55000 sq ft[8] department store, (confirmed as Debenhams[9]). There will be a new rooftop car park and the current ground car park will be refurbished and landscaped. There will be a new car park entrance/exit on union street, and a new taxi rank for station street.

Overall the extention hopes to create 200 full time and part time jobs.[10]
